The Kitchen Series Part II

Posted by on

Old Spitalfields Market is a foodie's dream hangout, filled with tasty treats inspired from all over the globe. We spoke to some of our favourite culinary neighbours from The Kitchens about their delicious offerings.

Yum Bun

Sourcing local ingredients for a modern take on an Asian classic, award winner Yum Bun is an experience like no other. A resident in Street Feast venues across east London, these little buns have been making their way into the hungry mouths of Londoners since 2010. We stopped by their Old Spitalfields Market store to speak with Hannah and Mariana about this loveable bun!

Tell us a bit about Yum Bun?
Yum Bun is going into its ninth year, making it a real London street food original! We started with a small stall at Broadway Market and have now grown to four sites with hopefully another location by the end of 2019. At Yum Bun we offer traditional Asian buns with a modern, British twist. Although we’re based on Asian flavours we use all British, locally grown ingredients, which creates difference in flavour than what you would experience in Asia. To us it’s about enjoying something simple from somewhere you love.

Describe your menu in three words.
Steamy, Asian and yummy.

Do you have a signature dish?
Our Pork Buns have been on the menu from day one and it’s still deemed the best to this day.

If you could only cook one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A mix of different dumplings!

Do you have any tips for people visiting Old Spitalfields Market? Any hidden gems?
It’s best to come with lots of time and just get lost. Also, make sure come ready to eat and pick a few different things to share.

Indi-go

Self-described “fresh, fun & affordable”, Indi-go is the Indian street food staple that started in Westfield Stratford in 2011. With its innovative ideas from the introduction of their first electric Tandoor oven, to their amazing bento boxes perfect for the lunch-break londoner, Indi-go is the go-to Indian street food experience. We spoke to Spitalfield’s Kitchen manager, Magaux, to better understand this contemporary take on traditional Indian street food.

Tell us a bit about Indi-go?
Indigo was created ten years ago. It was the first one to do indian street food in London, leading the street food trend. We have five branches in London, with another opening in two months. What’s special about Indi-go is that all our ingredients are fresh, nothing is frozen and cooked right in front of you. All the meat is cooked on site and the bread in baked fresh right here.

Describe your menu in three words.
Fresh, tasty and modern. We adapted the Indian style food to suit the people of London and make it affordable for everyone. By cooking the chicken in the tandoor, people can see what the menu is about while passing by. Our menu is short and easy to read, we have options for everyone - vegans, vegetarians, meat lovers and lovers of spice.

Do you have a signature dish?
The Indi-Bento. It’s been on our menu for a long time and is perfect for lunch. The container is recyclable and eco friendly.

If you could only cook one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Chicken Tikka.

Do you have any tips for people visiting Old Spitalfields Market? Any hidden gems?
I love that there is a Yoga studio hidden upstairs above the busy market.
